Decide Framework: Define, Express, Clarify, Identify, Demonstrate, Ensure - Empowering Leadership Teams

"Supporting team members through change requires both structure and compassion."

Making decisions is an important part of leadership! Communicating these leadership decisions to your team is something that I have heard time and again from my coaching clients to be something they find challenging to do. That changed for each of them when I taught The DECIDE Framework - a structured approach that transforms how you handle these seemingly difficult conversations.

The key isn't just about what you say, but how you say it. The framework teaches that being clear and direct isn't being harsh - it's actually the kindest approach you can take with your team. When you start anchoring your communication in business outcomes rather than personal explanations, you will notice something remarkable: your team members will feel safer and be more open and aligned, even when the decisions are tough.

The DECIDE Framework breaks down into six straightforward steps. First, Define the issue with a positive intention, setting the tone for the entire conversation. Then, Express the decision clearly - no beating around the bush. You will find that Clarifying new expectations immediately after helps people focus on the future success rather than dwelling on the change itself.

What's most impactful is Identifying the purpose behind changes, connecting decisions to larger business goals. This bigger-picture view helps team members understand the 'why' behind decisions. Also make sure to Demonstrate your commitment to supporting the transition, showing them that they are not alone in the process (it takes a team working together to achieve the best business results!). Finally, Ensure clarity and close your decision conversation with care, confirming understanding while maintaining professionalism.

The most valuable lesson to keep in mind is that being in self-leadership before these conversations is crucial. When you are centered and clear, the message comes across more effectively. You will no longer feel the need to over-explain or defend decisions - instead, your focus will be moving forward together.

Using this framework transforms what used to be dreaded conversations into opportunities for team alignment and growth. It's not about being perfect; it's about being clear, compassionate, and focused on shared business outcomes.
