"Adaptability is a skill that can be cultivated with intentional practice."

As a leadership coach, I teach a growth mindset not just as a professional tool, but as a deeply personal practice. A growth mindset is more than a strategy for success—it’s a way of being that fuels hope, energy, and the belief that things won’t always be as they are now. If change is possible, if growth is within reach, then no challenge is permanent, and no setback is final.

One of the most powerful realizations I took away from a recent learning experience is this: the belief that things can never improve is the root of despair. When we feel stuck, when we assume our reality is fixed, we close off the possibility of something better. But a growth mindset unlocks that possibility—for ourselves, for our teams, and for the world. It reminds us that progress, no matter how incremental, is always an option.

Growth Mindset and Personal Empowerment

I often ask myself: How can I show up today? What one small change will help me move toward the life I want to build? This shift in focus—from external circumstances to internal agency—is incredibly empowering. In a world that can feel chaotic, where politics and global events often leave us feeling disempowered, a growth mindset brings us back to what we can control: our own choices, our own actions, our own path forward.

In my work, I teach leaders that agreements are the foundation of teamwork. Clear agreements define how individuals contribute to a shared goal. But beyond team dynamics, I encourage leaders to evaluate the agreements they make with themselves. Personal agreements are powerful levers for growth. Something as simple as committing to start and end the workday by reviewing priority projects can create clarity and momentum. Ending the day with notes for yourself ensures you hit the ground running in the morning. Preparing for meetings ahead of time allows for more productive collaboration. Small, intentional agreements like these build habits that drive meaningful progress.

The Challenge of Change

Humans are wired for familiarity. We resist change, even when we know it’s good for us. But in my experience, we feel most alive when we see growth in ourselves and recognize the ripple effects of our positive impact. A growth mindset isn’t about rejecting what is familiar—it’s about embracing the potential of what could be.

When faced with change, the key is curiosity. Instead of reacting defensively, ask: What am I not seeing? A growth mindset doesn’t mean abandoning core beliefs or losing a sense of self. It means holding knowledge with both confidence and humility, staying open to learning, and being willing to evolve.

A Balanced Approach to Growth

Sustainable growth isn’t about pushing ourselves to extremes. It’s about balance—holding space for both structure and adaptability, for confidence and openness. Willpower is finite, and meaningful change happens through focused, strategic effort. The best way to nurture a growth mindset isn’t through dramatic overhauls, but through small, intentional steps.

If there’s one thing I hope leaders take away, it’s this: your growth matters. The agreements you make with yourself matter. And the belief that something better is possible? That belief changes everything.

What small agreement will you make with yourself today to move toward the life you want to create?
